SciComm4All

As a scientist, it is more than likely that you have already had the opportunity to discuss your field of research with non-specialists, either while doing science communication activities, or during a casual chat with friends or relatives. Perhaps you have already met a difficult audience, or you have had doubts about the best way to engage people with your research.

And that’s perfectly normal! Entering in a meaningful dialogue, transmitting and exchanging ideas and adapting your presentation to your audience are not skills that can be taken for granted. They need to be learned and practised. SciComm4all will give you some ideas and cues to improve your communication skills and be more comfortable and persuasive when discussing your research.

SciComm4all offers researchers short, self-guided learning modules composed of videos, additional resources (scientific articles, blogs, guidelines and toolkits…) and a self-assessment tool that will help you get familiar with the most important concepts in science communication.

SciComm4all aims to disseminate these self-training modules widely. By giving tools and methods to our colleagues that will facilitate their science communication, we hope that our project will bring science and society closer together.

Influenza Virus: A Challenge to the Immune System and to Medicine in the Light of Evolution

This ebook explains the basics needed to understand the flu virus and its evolution. It is accompanied by a printable board game (AN EVOLVING VIRUS) that aims to promote an understanding of the evolution of the influenza virus genome through the redistribution of its genomic segments and genetic mutations. This game aims to explore the seasonal generation of new variants through rearrangements that naturally occur in the genome of the influenza virus as a result of the interaction between different infected animals.

Material for Workshop on Assessments of Non-Formal Activities

This video has been prepared by Dr. Anna Beniermann (Humboldt-Universität Berlin, Germany) as an introduction to the design of questionnaires to collect quantitative data. Starting with general questions on which steps to take when planning a survey like formulating aims and research questions, the video gives insights into aspects of operationalization and quality criteria. By addressing objectivity, reliability and validity, the video points out central aspects and potential barriers for conducting a sound survey.

Animal and Human Coronaviruses: Evolution and Pathogenicity of the Virus and Disease Prevention

This book aims to assemble and disseminate information about the origin, evolution, and pathogenesis of animal and human coronaviruses in a simple and accessible way, and through this clarify readers’ doubts and fears as well as the rationale underlying transmission prevention actions.

The main text of the manuscript is accompanied by two types of additional information for optional consultation; more in-depth information about some of the mentioned concepts (know more) and a set of questions & answers, providing the reader with the opportunity to clarify doubts relating to the content of each section. For the preparation of this book, we counted on the collaboration of technicians, researchers, and academics in the areas of microbiology, epidemiology, animal health, and public health.

During the production and editing process, a board game and cards (Beat Corona) were also produced. These further explored some of the concepts mentioned in this book, including behaviors related to life in society and their implications in the transmission of diseases caused by coronaviruses, including COVID-19. This game can be used as a pedagogical resource in the classroom context, or as a mere leisure and learning activity.

EuroScitizen: Tailor-Made Resources

In order to ensure the efficient dissemination of all Action’s outputs, according to different target audiences, the project developed a series of infographics that according to the audience profile, namely teachers, researchers, policy makers and science centers/ museums, specific outputs are presented.
